Berber Carpeting and Allergies
Allergies are one of the biggest health concerns for people. Because of its unpredictable nature, there’s no telling on how severe an allergy attack can be. With regards to this, one of the most common causes of allergies is caused by airborne allergens. With that in mind, is there a link between the use of Berber carpeting and allergies? This article will try to take a look for an answer.
Berber carpets are becoming extremely popular for both private and commercial use. Because of their sheer durability, they are becoming the go-to choice for high-use areas such as doorways and halls. The secret behind this excellent durability is the unique way these carpets are constructed. Its loop pile construction is naturally resistant to dust, stains, and impact. As such, Berber carpets constructed using both natural and synthetic products are now being produced.
But there are numerous complaints surfacing with Berber carpeting with regards to allergies. But the question is, do these complaints have legitimate basis? Taking a look at different angles of the complaints is a good way to start.
- The fabric being allergenic- No matter what type of carpeting it is, there’s always the possibility that the person may be allergic to a particular component of the carpet. There are people who are allergic to fibers used for making Berber carpets such as wool, olefin, and nylon. Also, there are some people who are allergic with the chemicals used in producing the carpet. In that case, it doesn’t really matter what style of carpet you use. The important thing there is choosing a carpet alternative that doesn’t use these allergenic components.
- Captured particles being allergenic- Berber carpets have the reputation of being low-maintenance. And this is partly because of its ability to capture loose particles within the numerous loop piles. And while this is an advantage in terms of cleaning, this is a disadvantage for those with allergies. However, this perceived disadvantage can easily be mitigated by regular cleaning of the carpet. Even if it doesn’t look dirty, it helps a lot to keep a regular cleaning schedule.
There may be more questions regarding the use of Berber carpets. But for the most part, this is not the truth. In fact, multiple studies have shown that there’s no real link between the use of Berber carpeting and the emergence of allergies. These carpets are safe to use in your flooring, but you must check if you or any family member is allergic to any component used in making the carpet.
